Mission Statement

Medical Board:

The Foundation's Medical Board, consisting of three cardiologists, selects the work or individuals to be supported in a given year depending on the amount of funding which is available. The Medical Board presently consists of two eminent UCSF professors, Dr. Kanu Chatterjee and Dr. Teresa DeMarco, and a cardiologist in private practice, Dr. James Pfeifer. Grants are made to the Regents of the University for specific purposes in cardiac research as designated by the Medical Board.

Board of Directors:

The Foundation is overseen by a volunteer board of directors and volunteer officers, people interested in furthering and benefiting the work of UCSF cardiologists. This leadership by unpaid volunteers with broad experience in business, the professions and community activities means that Foundation expenses are minimized and that a very high percentage of all moneys donated to the Foundation is distributed in grants. No officer or director receives any pay for such service to the Foundation. The fostering of research by the Foundation is particularly important in the present era of government and University funding limitations and cutbacks.

Mission of the Foundation for Cardiac Research

The Foundation for Cardiac Research was organized in 1988, for the purpose of supporting research in cardiology and cardiovascular problems by physicians associated with the University of California at San Francisco. It is a non-profit California corporation, recognized as a charity by the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board.

The Foundation has been an officially recognized by the University Regents as a Support Group of the University of California at San Francisco since 1996, when the University first instituted its policy of formal review and recognition of support organizations.

The Foundation makes grants exclusively in support of research in cardiology and cardiovascular problems by physicians associated with the University of California at San Francisco, and is the only charitable organization devoted entirely to that purpose.

The Foundation has developed two major goals: to train young investigators who represent the future of academic cardiology in this country, and to further research and understanding treatment options for patients with various forms of heart disease, particularly congestive heart failure and vascular problems.

The Foundation is a section 501(c)(3) corporation under the Internal Revenue Code and an exempt organization under section 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code. Therefore, contributions are tax deductible within the limitations of a particular donor to the extent otherwise allowable.
